What is Mission Command?

Mission Command allows an organisation to make rapid decisions in an uncertain, fast-changing environment and to translate them, without delay, into decisive action.  As a philosophy it attempts to maximise human creativity, initiative and diligence.

Mission Command is at the core of the training that is delivered to the Officer Cadets of the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst (RMAS).  We work in partnership with RMAS  to leverage the best from the 200 years of leadership training and experience that the British Army has with the latest thinking from the business world.

What can mission command do for your organisation?

There are certain aspects of the Army’s Mission Command philosophy that are relevant to all positions of leadership. By bringing this military-based philosophy into the commercial world, the aim is to maximise human creativity, initiative and diligence, allowing employees to feel empowered and to act confidently.

Business managers have found that the principals that underpin Mission Command have provided ideas that can help resolve issues they currently face in the workplace. In addition to this mission command ensures:

  • Everyone within your organisation feels united and are working towards a common goal
  • Responsibility can be delegated to the lowest level
  • Employees feel empowered to operate with minimal supervision
  • A better understanding between staff and managers
