FUSION: a Global Leadership Development Programme with Measureable ROI

An international, multi-modular residential leadership development programme for a global bank with a business improvement project element that has delivered measurable benefits

Overview

FUSION is a highly-intensive, global programme created specifically to raise the individual and business performance bar and deliver quantifiable ROI in several different ways. Designed and implemented for a global bank, each iteration consists of five, three-day residential workshops, spread over a 12 month period. Starting and finishing at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK, the middle modules are delivered in various locations across the world including China, India and Hong Kong.

Client

One of the world’s leading international banks, serving 39 million customers from an international network that covers 66 countries and territories. Founded over 150 years ago, it serves customers ranging from individuals, families and start-ups, to medium-size companies, major international businesses and governments. With over 235,000 employees, the bank aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can achieve their potential, regardless of their background.

Challenge

The client wanted to harness the valuable collective experience and talent of their high-potential managers and to focus it on creating high-performing global teams that can deliver faster, better and more cost-effectively than the competition.

In addition, the client wanted the programme to innovative, highly memorable and world-class in its delivery, as well as having demonstrable ROI.

Solution

IDG designed a highly intensive programme that focused on business improvement through enhanced leadership & followership skills, closer networking & more effective team working.

Each iteration of carefully-selected participants are divided into cross-functional, cross-hierarchical teams who work at learning and practising new skills whilst being tasked with delivering a business improvement project that delivers tangible business benefits. The year-long duration of each programme allows for and encourages back-at-work application, networking, feedback and measurable payback.

A vital and required part of each FUSION iteration is support throughout from Senior Executive sponsors, with the sponsors attending the programme at least twice to offer support, advice and further networking opportunities.

The programme is supported by various psychometrics, including the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and an online 360º survey completed at the beginning and end of the programme.

Each FUSION consists of the following high-level elements:

  • Building high-performing teams from inception
  • Leadership, Followership & Team working skills.
  • Balancing managerial job roles.
  • Creating a personal commitment plan.
  • Initiating a networking, feedback and co-coaching process.
  • Personal leadership & followership styles.
  • Optimising your own & others’ personal work style differences.
  • Dealing effectively with tough stakeholder management situations.
  • Practicing team-based decision-making under time pressure.
  • Presenting to a panel of senior executives project ideas with demonstrable ROI.
  • Examining organisational risks and developing mitigation plans.
  • Understanding people’s reactions to change and the responses needed to support them.
  • Engaging effectively with stakeholders to secure successful organisational collaboration.
  • Developing the ability to innovate and think creatively for the benefit of the organisation.
  • Understanding risk and the potential impact it has on people.
  • Presenting the results to date of their project to a panel of senior executives.
  • Developing pragmatic actions for maintaining programme momentum and payback.
Results

FUSION has been delivered more than 35 times since its inception in 2008, and has won three industry awards, including The Most Effective Cultural Transformation Initiative at the Financial World Innovation Awards.

A conservative estimate of over $35 million in ROI has been achieved to date via these projects resulting in a development programme that is profitable. The pre and post-programme 360° objective feedback results for all completed iterations show a 9% overall objectively-measured improvement in strengths and a 6% overall reduction in development needs. The Kirkpatrick-based evaluation scores show an average of 80% for all workshops.

  CLIENT FEEDBACK

FUSION has delivered – and continues to deliver – measurable improvements in all targeted skills areas and in the service to our clients. It has broken down barriers of change and given the participants the ability and the support to make a difference within the organisation. All participants would recommend FUSION to others and many have already moved forward in their career paths due to the skills they learnt.

  PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK

FUSION helped me tap into a network of individuals who clearly felt passionately responsible for the Group’s values and for the development and personal growth of the wider team. As a programme, FUSION challenged me to analyse my skills and working style introspectively, but also to step up and lead with my sights set on a clearly selected and maintained aim. The FUSION off-sites helped me to understand the role of leadership in a pressured environment (using the lofty historical context of Sandhurst really brought the message home), while the final payback project provided me a much-needed exposure to senior management and executive sponsorship.
